EVERYONE'S DREAM IS THEIR OWN!
Research, research, and more research. With so many temptations on the market, it's easy to let your heart rule your head. My advice is know what you're looking for`so you can make an informed decision when purchasing (campers can set you back a pretty penny). Why not hire a van and embark on a short trip to get an idea of what you need/want and also what you don't need or want! It's a fab way of knowing what to include on your wish list (a wish list is a must!).
There are loads of sites and groups you can join through social media. When I was researching I found these really useful for gauging what was on the market, prices, van layouts etc. These sites can give you a very good idea of what it is that you're looking for and what your budget will allow.
Take a look around at motor homes and camper van showrooms. There are a lot of them in the southwest just off the M5 near Weston Super Mare but they are everywhere. I found it useful to spend a leisurely afternoon simply looking around (and inside) camper vans to give me an idea of what I liked and what I didn't.
Visit a camper van festival and talk to owners. They have a wealth of knowledge to share and in my experience, they are always happy to give you a tour.
Don't have your heart set on a particular model. Keep an open mind and view each camper as an individual... because they ARE all individual.
THIS IS LITTLE BLUE
Know your budget. It's oh so easy to get carried away when you begin viewing. With such a variety of specs out there it's important to remember... you are buying a vehicle and unless you are a mechanic, it's a good idea to stick to your budget and have a contingency fund, just in case things go wrong.
Don't get too carried away with the interior, it's more important to ensure that the van itself is in sound working order. The interior can be tweaked and accessories can be added later to give it character and to make it your own.
Research is key. Knowing your budget and what you can get for your money along with a prioritised wish list will help you to manage your expectations. We all have to make the best choice with what we have available.
INSIDE LITTLE BLUE
Here are some questions to ask. Being prepared is a good idea so you cover everything.
Is the vehicle registered as a camper with the DVLA? This will be documented on the V5 and means vehicle is exempt from diesel tax in city clean air zones...for now at least!
Does the camper have a service history? This will add value on resale and give you peace of mind.
Has the conversion been done professionally or is it a self build? Is there any paperwork as proof.
Does the owner know the weight of the van? Self builds are often hefty conversions (depending on materials used) so it's useful to have an idea, not just for insurance purposes, but also for your own peace of mind.
Has any wielding been necessary on the vehicle? This may give an indication of any future issues regarding rust.
Ask to see the latest MOT certificate and note any advisories. This will alert you to what may be required at the time of the next MOT.
What's included in the sale? EHU (Electric Hook Up) leads? An awning? Interior contents? Blackout window covers/blinds?
