WHAT HAVE I BEEN READING?...in short
The Beekeeper of Aleppo
Christy Lefteri
Literary Fiction
WOW...what a book! This is the harrowing story of Nuri, a beekeeper and his wife, Afra as they flee war torn Syria in search of not only safety but also each other again.
The memories of their unspeakable loss plays on their minds, following them through each step of their perilous journey, haunting them through the darkness. A darkness deep enough to sadden even the hardest of hearts. Their journey is unimaginable but they have each other. Each other and the memories of their bee farm in Aleppo, the sights and sounds of which are brought alive by the authors vivid descriptions.
This beautifully told story is one of hope. Hope of a new day, a new life, a safer place. Hope that in each new day, memories of the old life, when it was good, will never be forgotten. It's a story of determination, of trust, of moving forward in the knowledge that the past can never be forgotten, of incredible human strength and the power to overcome.
The Beekeeper of Aleppo is engaging, moving, informative, thought provoking and a reminder that life is truly a lottery, with peace, safety and hope all reliant on where in the world we are born.
This is, without doubt, one of the best books I have read. It's a powerful MUST READ.
