Now officially on the NC500 and what a day 4 it was.
Dolphin watching at Chanonry Point on the Firth. So many Dolphins...what an incredible sight. So worth the little detour. They can be seen playing at any time but you're more likely to see them on the rising tide (around an hour after low tide).
Absolutely AMAZING! Go see for yourself.
Drove on up to Loth near Helmsdale to a gem of a campsite, Crackaig, ON THE BEACH! Keep your eyes open for the sign as it's small and easy to miss from the road, there is also a low bridge to get to the site so check the height of your van before attempting to enter.Parked up in an isolated spot, this campsite is huge with lots of space (drive in slowly though, the ground is very uneven). Spent the late afternoon/evening drinking Scottish beer, enjoyed a meal cooked by Joe (chocolate orange for pudding - a lot of effort made there Joe), a walk on the John O Groats beach trail, a nail biting game of chess and a fine red wine. So relaxing with gorgeous sunshine and views and the sounds of the sea to lull us to sleep.
Woke up early to watch the sun rise over the ocean. Never felt luckier. Thank you to Lisa David and Andrew Leworthy for the CRACKAIG campsite recommendation. Yes, the facilities are basic with no EHU but...IT'S ON THE BEACH (did I say that already?)...truly PERFECT!
