WHALIGOE STEPS...337 steps steeply winding down the cliff to reach the ocean below. A stunning sight, a must see...pop it on your wish list. Take your time though, its a steep climb back up and don't forget to pop a little something in the donation box to help keep the steps well maintained.
We were introduced to Davey who had us fixated with his historical knowledge and incredible stories about the steps. If you go, be sure to find Davey, he lives in the cottage at the top and he's not only a mind of information but lots of fun too. We took on his, infamous, bike riding challenge...we failed...if you know, you know!
Pushed on up to Noss Head Lighthouse for a relaxing spot of lunch in Blue before wandering over to explore the ruins of Castle Sinclair Gringoe and its INCREDIBLE views. There is a free car park and just a short, 10-15 minute walk to the ruins.
A short drive to John O Groats (obligatory photo!) where the views of the islands were, quite simply, stunning. From here we took a stroll over the headland (you can drive and park there) to Duncansby Stacks and down, the rope, onto a tiny secluded beach. Loads ticked off the wish list, in glorious weather with spectacular scenery along the way.
MY TWO FAVOURITE PHOTOS!
Another FREE (apart from the fuel!!!) and fulfilling van life day finished off with an amazing tapas meal in Thurso harbour. Carried on up the coastal road, chasing the stunning sunset before setting up to wild camp for the night in a beautiful spot overlooking a herd of deer crossing the river and, one of my favourite things, wind turbines. Both amazing sights, both made even more memorable by the beautiful backdrop of the setting sun...happy times.
REALLY FEELING THE FREEDOM NOW
